Main Theme: Pruning & Winter Fertilization
January marks the beginning of the pruning season in hazelnut orchards. Pruning can begin once the leaves have completely fallen. Proper pruning during this period directly affects next season’s yield.
Frost Risk
Frost risk is high in January. Carry out pruning on frost-free days. Avoid pruning when temperatures drop below -5°C.
Pruning Operations
The main goals of hazelnut pruning are to ensure adequate air and light circulation, remove diseased branches, and increase yield.
Pruning Rules
- Dry and diseased branches should be pruned first
- Inner branches that are crowded should be thinned
- Apply wound sealant to cut surfaces
- Suckers growing from the main trunk should be removed
Expert Advice
Disinfect your pruning tools between each tree. This prevents diseases from spreading from one tree to another.
Fertilization
Winter fertilizer application can be done in January. Fertilizer planning should be based on soil analysis results.
- Farm manure: 25-30 kg per tree, once every 3-4 years
- Potassium: According to soil analysis
- Phosphorus: According to soil analysis
Soil Analysis
Always get a soil analysis before applying fertilizer. You can obtain free soil analysis services from provincial/district agricultural directorates.
Orchard Cleanup
- Fallen leaves and fruit remnants should be collected from the ground
- Diseased branch debris should be removed from the orchard
- Drainage channels should be checked and blockages cleared
Important Considerations
Common Mistakes
Excessive pruning weakens the tree and reduces yield. Do not prune more than 30% of the tree at once.
